mashaAllah…JazakumAllah khair for this > “busy does not mean accomplishment”.
I really don’t want to share what I did yesterday, got sick and got lazy and my schedule went down the drain. I was not motivated to do anything although I have so much to do. And now following up with yesterday’s schedule.
Looking back at yesterday I actually did get a few projects done but the two days before that were really wasted and I don’t recall doing anything productive.
Here’s a q: Every once in a while I try to make a list of plans for the next day – things that I want to accomplish, but I always get sidetracked with the less important things and all of a sudden you see that the day is gone. What are some ways that you can avoid that and stay focused on the important things?
@munny wa jazakum.
Forgot to mention mine:
1 Accomplishment Yesterday – completed the FaceBook page and found the “share” button (@Amany thanks for the reminder to find that).
But a good chunk of it got wasted (wasn’t feeling well)
I really took this concept to heart 2 months ago (that’s the “experiment” thing I’ll put in the RE: video inshaAllah)
Here’s the thing though, as long as there’s 1 accomplishment per day, wasting time isn’t as big an issue…
sallams, i find it hard to accomplish things, i always get distarcted when i want to start something, yesterday i was on the computer thought i’ll do some errands, but then got distacted and went on utube listening to islamic talks, (i guess thats not that bad but it kind of is when you know you got something to do) now today i’m busy trying to finish what i was supposed to do yesterday and today
if you can help please let me know how to get away from distractions, and how to get motivated.
plus i have not heard of this concept before. Also i want to thank you for giving up your time in helping others, love your video messages and emails. Jazaka Allah Khair.
I get distracted a lot too and i don’t know how to manage my time….I wanted to keep a strict schedule military style…you know…get up 4am-pray tahajjud, 5:30=fajr, etc….but never can stick to it….and distractions abound. what should i do? Also, should i follow time very strictly? For example i keep 8 hours for studying(2pm-10pm) but never get around it…always start later like 9pm for example or just postpone it..or sometimes 8 hours are not enough for what i need to accomplish in my courses…some courses take longer to understand then others,HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELp!!
Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmat Allah wa Barakatuh bro,
A schedule is needed and then you must stick to it? I always end up not following it!
Another issue is distractions and having so many things pop into your mind when you
want to accomplish a task.
I sometimes get distracted by listening to Islamic Lectures on youtube same as Aziza … what are the solutions.
Another thing that distracts me is listening to islamic lectures right when I want to go to sleep and wake up early for fajr .. I find myself killing almost 2 hours daily. Ex. Lets say I go to bed at 11:30pm and I end up sleeping at 1:30′ish … juss by listening to lectures on youtube and all … any solution for this?
Finally, what is your advice to keep focused … and accomplish what one wants to really accomplish in life?
Thanks!
@Sadiyah Y’know, having a big list of things to do can sometimes look daunting…
1) It is great that you planned tasks out for the next day (even if you don’t complete them, continue doing this)
2) As I mentioned, it may seem daunting to see all these things so we unconsciously get sidetracked with “busy” work.
Something you could do is prioritize that list and have just 1 thing you NEED to do. Everything else would be bonus.
So 1 Top Priority Task and do that as early as possible – you can build momentum and do the rest…or at least you can sleep peacefully at night
@Aziza khanam wa alaikum assalaam sr.Aziza,
About the distractions point, I have a lesson in the http://www.UntangleYourTime.com series – dono if you’ve checked that out
Also, you can check these 2 and see if it’s helpful.
About working in the right environment, like you mentioned the YouTube thing…so maybe internet is a distraction you can avoid while you work on other stuff:

About bringing things to completion, sometimes it doesn’t even need to be great but just needs to be done:

wa jazakum for commenting, inshaAllah you benefit from this.
- if you benefit, I’d love it if you share it too
@Altaf Ghori I hear you bro, I kinda have this military discipline DREAMS…but real life aint like that
YOUR QUESTION: About serious discipline and about studying time.
1 point on discipline, think in terms of habits instead of quick fix.
Example: Break down your sleep/pray goal into smaller elements like adjust sleep, do additional nawafil, increase khushoo’ in salaah, learn about tahajjud and how the salaf/current people build that habit.
Take it 1 thing at a time, that’s where the consistency with accomplishments comes in instead of 180 degree turn.
Same thing for studying, break down the different areas you need to focus on and take em out 1 by 1 inshaAllah
wa alaikum assalaam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh Gouled,
YOUR QUESION summary: About following a schedule and dealing with distractions (even the “good” kind)
Many people have trouble following a schedule (myself included). I mentioned few related points @Sadiya I believe.
1 thing to attach to your top priority taks = WHY?
Give yourself a reason why it must be done that day and the consequences for not doing it.
It can be real life pros/cons like not studying for exams, and it can be your own reward/punishment attached to it.
Distractions – Y’kno with Islamic lectures being a distraction, this may be a trap of Shaytan.
Shaytan doesn’t only want people to commit haram, he invites people to do lesser of 2 goods.
Ex. listen to Islamic lectures…but that may cause to miss Fajr
Ex. do dawah work all day long till you’re tired…but act disrespectfully (maybe unintentionally) to parents
What do you do if you have… lets say, migraines all the time. Or headaches. You don’t know when they hit, really… but when they do, they ruin your entire schedule and make you fall behind.
I’ve noticed that when I’m under pressure, I tend to be more productive… you know, when you have a deadline approaching. Like AP exams… You never bothered to finish the course, but a week before the exam, you start learning all the concepts you should have learned 3 weeks ago. That’s one problem with the flexibility of homeschooling!
You should do a video on diet and fitness and how it affects productivity. That’s an important one that people don’t really focus much on.
@Zainab Comment Summary: Dealing with migraines, working under pressure, topic suggestion.
Migraines – Sometimes when there’s a “blockage” we tend to panic, in the sense that we worry about the problem and what else isn’t getting done…instead focus on the solution.
Ex. If migraine’s the issue, then focus on the migraine (ie. relax, medication or whatever you need to do to resolve it). It’s easier said than done, but it’s a worthwhile study to having better control over your state/mind/emotional responses.
I can’t think of resources at the moment. Does that make sense though?
Video – Ya that’s definitely important, inshaAllah sometime in the near future.
I wish zero dental cavities for you too.
A lot of people are asking about what to do about distractions when trying to accomplish something. I way would be to include the distractions within your schedule for the day. Like do whatever you’re doing for 20-30 mins or 1 hr or however long you can, and then for 10-15 mins watch something on youtube. But make sure you put a restriction on that time so you can go back to what you were doing.
@Tarif hehe
That’s definitely important to schedule in breaks/distractions and that helps in the long run…but ya it’s easy to get carried away so need to keep it restricted.
Are you going to do a response vid for this?
@Sadiyah eeek
Yes inshaAllah (within the next few days), I do apologize for not doing that on time…few things happening
Jazakallahukhair for the reminder
salam brother nahyan…just wanted to say salam
wsalam
